When WLS was asked to revamp the security systems at a 1,200-student academy school in North London, there were a number of challenges.

Three of the buildings were spread out across a 4-acre campus with numerous points of entry. The security needed to be able to cover a busy schedule of extra-curricular activities that often ran late into the night.

The academy was dealing with an outdated security set up that were not talking to each other. The access control system overhaul needed to meet advanced security requirements but be simple to operate. We knew Paxton 10 was the best choice for this particular job.

Paxton 10: the agent of change

Paxton 10 is an upgrade on Net2 (Paxton’s original product), an access control-only model that was designed to work with third party CCTV surveillance systems

With Paxton 10, both access control and CCTV functionality are built into a single integrated system. The benefit of the newer, upgraded Paxton 10 is that since both security systems are supplied by the same company, they are designed to work together seamlessly without requiring complex integration between different manufacturers’ systems.

Following a review by our specialist team, WLS installed a fully integrated Paxton 10 security system that had the flexibility to develop along with the school.

Particular attention was paid to the bicycle storage area which had been subject to repeated thefts despite being in clear view of the main building. With the promotion of cycling actively encouraged as part of the school’s sustainability initiatives, addressing this was important.

Paxton security: linking the lot

WLS security professionals deployed an end-to-end Paxton security system that transformed the school’s approach to safety and access. The solution included:

  • Smart access management
  • Cloud-based access control across all buildings
  • Mobile credentials for teachers and sixth form students
  • Automated door locks linked to the school timetabling system
  • Dedicated access procedures for community groups utilising facilities outside school hours
  • Enhanced Paxton 10 surveillance
  • Facility access points positioned strategically around bike storage locations and key entry points
  • Appearance search technology to assist in the identification and tracking of probable security threats

Paxton 10 smart alarm systems

  • Intelligent sensors for perimeter protection
  • Access control system-integrated door security alarms
  • Automated lock-down capabilities that can be remotely triggered
  • Environmental monitoring with vape detection in at-risk areas

The result: A safer learning environment

Following the implementation of the new Paxton 10 system, the school has experienced a radical transformation:

  • Zero reported bike thefts over the initial six months
  • 60% reduction in false alarms
  • Seamless completion of two lockdown drills with minimal disruption

The security staff can now operate everything from one single platform, whether they’re on campus or responding remotely. Staff like the mobile access and parents have reported feeling more confident about campus safety.

What other schools can learn from this Paxton 10 installation

For other schools considering similar upgrades, the experience highlights the following considerations for all education facilities.

  • The importance of choosing systems that can harmoniously integrate
  • The advantage of cloud-based solutions for flexibility and remote access
  • The necessity of finding a balance between security and accessibility for legitimate users
  • The benefit of a phased implementation approach.

“The key was thinking beyond just cameras and locks,” said Jeremy Ewen, Managing Director at WLS. “Through Paxton 10’s advanced technology, we’ve been able to create a system that helps the school manage everything from visitor access to environmental monitoring. It’s about creating a secure space that still feels welcoming and appropriate for a place of learning.”
