Shame, shame, shame.
Boris talks about raising wage levels in the UK by keeping out foreign labour. What madness is this? Is this what us Brexiteers voted for? Are we all small-minded racists with protectionist instincts? I sincerely hope not.
To me, the principal point of leaving Europe was to reclaim the ability to shape our own destiny without interference from Brussels and part of that ability should include allowing skilled foreign labour into the country. In the 1990s we started employing both sales and engineering staff from South Africa. In the 2000s more than 30% of our engineers were migrants from Poland, more recently we have taken on some highly-skilled engineers from Eastern Europe – not for any other reason than their enthusiastic work ethic and specialised skills. Far from “getting drunk on cheap labour”, we have always paid the same to both foreign and native staff.
At WLS, we look for people with the necessary skills and who are committed to their work. Now we are really struggling to employ more top-notch engineers. They are out there in foreign climes but are no longer welcome here. Is this not a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face?
